Marcos Duarte was born in 1967, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nature has always been part of his daily life, since childhood. Growing up among trees, wood and all kind of plants and animals, play and work always seemed hard to distinguish. This particular connection is a primary element of his work, in that the wood is not a simple material, but an interlocutor on subjects of nature and social interactions.
His first contact with contemporary art took place in 2009, in the João Carlos Goldberg’s 3D Atelier, in the School of Visual Arts (EAV) in the Park Lage. Since 2013, Marcos remains as teaching assistant of 3D atelier and, since March 2019, also teaches the course Atelier of Material Transformation.
Important references in his work come from Andy Goldsworthy, Giuseppe Penone, and Richard Long, inasmuch as they experience potent emanation from natural landscapes through intense dialogues within these territories. The symmetrical purity from Constantin Brancusi has been a strong influence as well.
As noted by Luis Guilherme Vergara, Director of Museum of Contemporary Art – MAC Niretói (2014), “... Marcos Duarte is an artist who lives and works in this sphere-world of culture and nature, through nature he makes art, and through art itself he makes the nature to be round……from the rare craftsman such as Marcos Duarte who uses his own hands as an extension of his thoughts which are the beginning of new concept-forms of poetic resistance in the contemporary world, globally directed by electronic technologies under the primacy of digital users.”
Marcos Duarte is represented in Rio de Janeiro by the C Gallery and his works are included in diverse Brazilian art collections, as of Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC-Niterói), João Satamini, Hélio Porto Carrero, and others.
